The evidence is clear: authentically connecting employees to their sense of purpose at work is hugely beneficial for your organization’s health and success. A clear purpose motivates and inspires. It gives life focus, direction and meaning. Those we admire most and choose to follow often earn our loyalty by aligning our values with their purpose. We perceive these leaders as being imbued with (and aligned to) their purpose.
Due to demand, successfully activating purpose is an emerging organizational imperative. Unfortunately, despite clear benefit and no shortage of desire and intention, organizations struggle to make purpose tangible and accessible. For some, purpose feels too abstract to be useful. For others, it feels too big or only meaningful for companies doing “more important” work.
Purpose improves so many of HR’s most important aspirations and objectives: health, well-being, performance, engagement, retention, skill acquisition, belonging. We believe the organizations who are able to think boldly and strategically about how to authentically nurture purpose will excel in the next decade. HR and People teams have the unique ability to drive that change—but how?
