Game Design For Innovation

WHY GAME DESIGN?
You can make a game out of pretty much anything. The key is figuring out a smart way to use the object to spark play and rules to shape that play. A playful activity lays at the heart of many popular games. Soccer grows out of kicking a ball. The joy of stacking blocks provides the basis of Jenga. Spinning tops power Beyblades. Playful activities need not be limited to toys: Pick up any object, spend a few minutes playing with it and you will find that it has interesting qualities that allow for a range of different interactions. Discovering them requires playing with the object exploring what it can do.
In this analog hands-on workshop you will explore and apply game design strategies using common materials to create a game and we will discuss how to use game design as innovation strategies.

Criswell Lappin is Creative Director at ScrollMotion. Prior to ScrollMotion, Criswell led a team at Institute of Play, a 501-3c non-profit at the intersection of games and learning, he founded and co-led a research and development lab focused on designing experiences and resources that cultivate peer learning communities. At the innovation consultancy Fahrenheit 212, he developed and designing new commercial product ideas for companies like Samsung, Charles Schwab, Lowes, and Outback. Before that, Criswell was the creative director of award-winning design, architecture, and culture monthly, Metropolis magazine for over a decade.
Criswell currently teaches in the MFA program at School of Visual Arts.
